A look at recent research regarding fluid intake during extended exercise. How does an athlete decide how much fluid they should be drinking, at what intervals, what proportion of it should be a sports drink, etc.? The issue is rather complicated due to variations in exertion, environmental conditions, body differences etc. The one elegant solution, which is drinking in response to thirst, does not seem to have a lot of scientific consensus behind it. I find that surprising.
